AWARDS FOR JEANNETTE AND ME
I'm thrilled about the all the attention my latest book, Jeannette Rankin: Political Pioneer, has received. The latest is the 2008 Nonfiction Award from the Children's Literature Council of Southern California. I make my first acceptance speech at their wonderful award brunch in October. Now what shall I wear.....?? A Jeannette outfit from one hundred years ago? Basic black? Something outrageous, like Jeannette herself? Check back here to find out.

Jeannette Rankin: Political Pioneer was selected by the State of Montana to be featured at their State Pavillion this year. I was there with bells on, to greet all and sundry who attended.

Learning to Write for Children
I am now teaching at UCLA Extension, both online and on campus. The course is a Writing Workshop with lots of reading of many genres of children's literature. Check the UCLA Extension catalog for further details.

Website Surprises
I've had some wonderful surprises from my website -- long-lost cousins and friends finding me, readers from Alaska to Louisiana writing to me.

Perhaps the most surprising was the man from Holland who read Katje the Windmill Cat in Dutch, and wrote to tell me more about the real baby who was saved by her cat in that flood six hundred years ago. The brave rescue took place in his town of Dordrecht, and the baby's name was Beatrice. Her descendants still live in Dordrecht and keep the family legend alive. However, as far as I know, we don't know the name of the heroic cat, so until then, she will remain Katje (which means Kitty in Dutch.)
